- Encourage students to discuss ideas with one another, trying to allow students to exchange partners to gather more ideas. It allows for students to explore ideas beforehand if they want to share it with the entire class afterwards.
- Discuss with students about what phrases or words that are said, that could prevent a conversation from moving forwards. (Ex: No/Yes, agreeing/disagreeing all the time, passive responses [that's interesting], subjective [like/don't like] etc.) Use words such as "I appreciate..." or ask the person talking what they think or how they felt about something they did.
- In ensembles it's possible to rid of a hierarchy, make it important for students to get to know one another and their sections in an ensemble/team. The group is as strong as its weakest link, everyone is important.
- There can be a buddy system incorporated, allowing older students to guide/lead younger or newer individuals.
- Frequent activities that allow students to intermingle with one another. Know that there are those who prefer not to join along.
- As a teacher do not hover over group work. It stresses students out. Allow them to explore and discuss their own ideas.
- Make eye contact with students as they speak.
